In 2013 Calvin, Giordano & Associates, Inc. (CGA), teamed with Dania Entertainment Center (DEC) as part of a $60 million makeover of the Casino at Dania Beach. The full project team consisted of design professionals throughout the world to include; DEC, a group of Argentinian investors; F3 Architects, based in Argentina; local architect FSMY; GSA Consulting Engineers, out of Pennsylvania; and local MEP consultant, Steven Feller, PE, PL.
CGA was responsible for surveying, civil engineering, site electrical, and landscape architecture on the project. This included the site design of the new casino’s onsite and offsite improvements to the existing Jai-alai facility to accommodate a new casino, restaurants, and multipurpose room. Site plan processing, public hearing attendance, and numerous site plan meetings were included in this process to achieve site plan approval on time from the Commission. CGA provided color renderings of the master plan to illustrate the proposed improvements to the community and Commission. CGA was also responsible for the design and permitting for new offsite water mains, onsite service connections for water and sewer, site circulation, coordination of utilities, and minor drainage modifications.
Redesign of Fronton Blvd, a City-owned roadway, was included in the improvements under the project. A median was added, as well as an additional southbound lane, new parking for the adjacent park, and two new entrances to the facility. The medians were designed with large date palms and foxtail palms and enhanced with colorful annuals and shrubs.
In addition, CGA managed the Fronton Blvd electrical design and handled the construction inspections of the lighting once installed. The Construction inspection for both the onsite, (private property) and the offsite, (Fronton Blvd), was performed by CGA’s Construction Administration group.
The execution of this contract required the exceptional talents of multiple CGA departments and their staff. The CGA team included Civil Engineering department, Jenna Martinetti, PE; Landscape Architecture team, led by Tammy Cook-Weedon, ASLA, RLA, LEED BD+C; Survey & Mapping, led by Steve Watts, PSM the Planning department with Hoyt Holden, AICP; and the Traffic Engineering team who performed the traffic study and analysis.
Construction began in December 2014; with the final improvements completed April 2016, the group was excited to celebrate the new casino’s opening February 26, 2016. Throughout this contract, CGA forged many positive relationships with each firm, and look forward to additional opportunities to work with the client(s) and partnering firms in the future.
