Calvin, Giordano & Associates provided construction inspection and contract management services under this contract that included the construction of three projects. Project features included the construction of an 18-span slip ramp bridge over water, a one-span bridge connector with MSE wall construction, the milling and resurfacing of I-75 from Sheridan Street to I-75/I-595 interchange and the installation of lighting in the I-75/I-595/Sawgrass interchange. Additional construction activities included roadway lighting, guardrail, signage, and other miscellaneous items.
This project consists of the milling and resurfacing of 6.95 gross miles, varying from eight to ten lanes, from north Sheridan Street to the Sawgrass Expressway, including the on- and off-ramps at Griffin Road, Royal Palm and I-595 interchange. This project also included the installation of sign trusses, cantilever sign structures, installation of over 24,000 linear feet of new guardrail, and other miscellaneous items.
Slip Ramp Construction
This challenging project attracted the eye of the Department for its Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP) for the 18-span slip ramp bridge. Our team was essential in reviewing and negotiating this new design, which saved the Department and the contractor $240,000. In general, this project consisted of the construction of a slip ramp from westbound I-595 to northbound I-75 to westbound SR 84 for direct access to the Weston Road intersection. The ramp consists of a 15-foot lane roadway with 6-foot shoulders on each side. The new slip ramp intersects with the ramp from southbound Sawgrass Expressway to westbound I-75 (NW Connector). The NW Connector roadway is raised and a new bridge goes over the new slip ramp. The roadway portion has two 12-foot lanes, an 8-foot shoulder on the left side, and a 12-foot shoulder on the right side. Additional construction activities included: roadway lighting, guardrail, signage, and MSE wall construction.
The lighting project consisted of new lighting installations at all driver decision locations within the Sawgrass interchange at I-75 and I-595, such as the exit to the new slip ramp. A total of 254 new light poles were installed, which included new service points and new wiring.
